the URBN Center Addition

A large lobby and exhibition space connects the new addition to the URBN Center to the existing building.

The main theater space is designed to open to the adjacent park-let behind the URBN center. On concert days, a portion of Filbert Street would close to allow patrons to filter in and out of the theater and park while enjoying the show.

The upper levels of the addition are designed to provide more public student space. Where the two buildings meet, a small atrium light well highlights the terracotta facade of the URBN Center and brighten the adjoining student lounges.

A grand public entry hall channels people through the building to the theater space beyond.

Patrons filter in and out of the open theater space during a performance.

The building is designed to house smaller office spaces on the market street side of the building while providing additional studio spaces on the northern, Filbert street side of the site. These two areas straddle a large circulation atrium in between.

The floor levels align with the main levels of the URBN Center and connect with the building at existing elevator lobby and circulation spaces.

As described in the IZE PRIZE document, a ticket booth seperates the iconic existing facade with the additions facade. This allows both buildings to address the street independently and break down the scale of the building.

The new facade is designed to address climactic issues with a southern facade while hearkening back to the "garden theater" concept of the building. Exterior planters overflow with foliage and contrast with copper piping horizontal louvers that block the incoming sun from the outside.
